What to See in Hout Bay

One of the main attractions in Hout Bay is the World of Birds. This bird park is the largest in Africa and is home to over 3 000 birds and a variety of small animals. An amazing experience awaits you here, walking through the bird cages, watching and playing with the monkeys while supporting this excellent team of bird lovers and rescuers! Not to be missed!  (Tel. +27 21 790 3270)

The Hout Bay Museum has all the facts, and some interesting stories and photos, depicting the colourful history of Hout Bay.  (Tel. +27 21 790 4998)

Hout Bay still has a working harbour, and is well known as a fishing village. There are many different boat trips and water sports to suit all tastes and experience levels.

Hout Bay has a few shopping centres and many small shops that are worth visiting.

The Mainstream Shopping Centre has a Woolworths (equivalent to Marks & Spencer in the UK), Clicks (equivalent to Boots UK), hairdressers, gift shops, liquor store, restaurants, clothing/fashion stores, toy shop, pharmacy and much more!

Visit the Hout Bay Craft Market on Sundays (across the road from the Post Office in Main Rd) to see a wealth of local arts and crafts. Explore the strech of Main Road between Princess Street and the beach for some interesting shops. You'll find curios, locally made arts & crafts, clothes, bathing suits, etc. Also visit the arts & crafts shop at the Oakhurst Centre in Main Road (towards Constantia) - they have excellent locally made gifts and curios, at very reasonable prices.

You will be able to see a whole variety of art in the galleries of Hout Bay. They support the local artists, and will be able to give you further information about what is available here. Please e-mail them to learn more about the art they exhibit and sell.
